Table of Contents

Having performed more than 15000 cataract surgeries over 14 years, this is one of the most common questions that our patients ask when they are planning for cataract surgery. ‘Sir, please suggest what is the best brand of IOL or which lens will be best for me?’.

The answer is however more nuanced than a simple straightforward one. With years of cataract surgery experiences and implanting 1000s of multifocal and premium lenses, I am here to guide you about making the right choice on how to get the best lens for your cataract surgery.

First of all - there is nothing like ‘The Best Brand’ for IOL or intraocular lens after a cataract surgery.

With IOLs, the lens which suits you the best will be the best for you.

We get a lot of patients who make decisions for their eyes by hearing what their neighbour or a relative got for themselves. But they forget, what works for one patient may not work for the other.

Cataract surgery may seem simple and straightforward, but it’s actually not. Your outcome depends on a lot of factors, and intraocular lens (IOL) is probably the most important amongst these. India has availability of almost all international brands of IOLs. Plus, there are a lot of Indian companies producing excellent quality lens now (almost at par with international lenses) at a significantly lower cost.

The most preferred international brands for IOLs after cataract surgery are:

1.Alcon: -They have monofocal (Acrysof IQ, Clareon autonome), EDOF (Vivity), Multifocal (Panoptix) options. All these lens options also come in Toric option to correct any cylindrical power that you may have. Lens quality is excellent, visual results very good and internationally one of the most popular brands used all over the world in best eye institutions.

2.Johnson & Johnson - Same options availaible (Tecnis-1, Eyhance in monofocal; Puresee in EDOF; Synergy and Odyssey in Multifocal). Equal to alcon, excellent visual results, trusted by thousands of eye doctors, and lenses used worldwide.

3.Zeiss - All similar options available. Quality at par with Alcon and Johnson & Johnson.

4.Others- Like Bausch & Lomb (USA), Rayner, BVI (Europe), Hoya (Japan), etc - only minor differences in results but most commonly used ones are the above 3.

Then there are Indian brands with IOLs that are reaching quality levels of international brands:

1.Care Group IOLs
2.Biotech IOLs
3. Appasamy, Aurolabs, Adtec, Devine meditech, etc.

Indian companies also have all ranges of IOLs including monofocals, toric IOLs, Multifocal lenses, etc. Many people compare Indian lenses with international lenses. While, earlier international lenses used to have better outcomes, this gap has slowly but surely reduced significantly. Indian lenses are now also being used worldwide and come at a much cheaper price as compared to international lenses. Now the question comes that people get confused, which one should they choose. There are so many options and they are not sure which one will give the best outcome to them.

So, let me give some simple tips about making the right choice of lens for your eyes:

1.LET YOUR DOCTOR GUIDE YOU:We doctors think differently from the patients, because we have operated thousands of cases and seen the results with different lenses (good or bad), your doctor can guide you towards the right choice for your eye. When a doctor guides you and tells you that this is the best IOL for cataract surgery in your case, you can go with that choice safely (provided that you trust the doctor to be the best eye doctor in your area).

2.TYPE OF LENS MATTERS MORE THAN COMPANY OF LENS:Choosing between monofocal, EDOF, Multifocal, Toric lens is more important rather than the company of the lens. So discuss about your visual requirements and lifestyle with your doctor to make the right decision. So when patients ask me ‘Sir, which is company has best lens for cataract surgery in Ghaziabad’ – I tell them that make the right choice for the category of lens rather than the company itself. If you want independence from glasses completely but chose a monofocal lens – you will still need near glasses whether its Zeiss or Alcon.

3.NOT EVERY LENS IS SUITABLE FOR EVERY PATIENT:You won’t buy a mercedes car because your neighbour bought one. You will see your own budget, your own requirements and your own life goals. Similarly, you have different visual requirements, your eyes will have different cornea shape, pupil size, retina health, etc; all these things are important before deciding on the IOL after cataract surgery. Often patients ask me over the phone that will this be the best lens for me- and I tell them, first find the best eye doctor and the best eye hospital in your area, if you trust the doctor, trust the lens chosen by them.

4.BUDGET:This is a very significant factor. Even with same lens features, international lens may cost 5–20K extra over Indian lens. Also Multifocal, toric, EDOF lens will be expensive as compared to Monofocal lens. Sometimes, patient wants to get rid of glasses completely but also want Laser cataract surgery but do not have the budget for both. They end up choosing monofocal lens with femto-laser cataract surgery- which is the wrong choice. The lens is going to be in your eye forever – so best lens according to your needs, should be the first priority. Routine phaco surgery has equally good outcome to laser cataract surgery, if performed by an experienced surgeon. To know more about femto-laser cataract surgery, read our blog:Femto-Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS): A Complete Guide by Dr. Vikas Veerwal | Best Cataract Surgeon in India

5.ITS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME DECISION: For all practical purposes, IOL once put insider your eye will remain throughout life and will not be changed. It can be changed only in case of a major issue. So, think hard and long before making the final decision.

6.SURGERY, SURGEON AND SURGICAL PLANNING MATTERS MORE: Choosing the best IOL but the planning was not correct, power of IOL chosen was not correct or there is an intraoperative complication- the outcome will still be bad, doesn’t matter the brand. So choose the right surgeon for your eyes, the IOL brand becomes secondary if the planning and surgery is done right. Don’t just go by youtube marketing or facebook ads – actively see whether you are finding the doctor and hospital to be trustworthy. This will help you in choosing the best eye doctor and the best eye hospital for your cataract surgery in Noida and Ghaziabad.

If someone is looking for: “Which is the best lens after cataract surgery in Ghaziabad or Noida?”

The answer usually depends on what the patient wants:

Patient Goal Best Lens Type / Brand Category
Want best distance vision Premium monofocal lenses (Alcon, J&J, Zeiss)
Want freedom from glasses Trifocal / Multifocal lenses (PanOptix, TECNIS multifocal)
Have cylindrical power Toric IOL lenses (available in all top brands)
Want best quality night vision Premium monofocal / EDOF lenses
Looking for affordable surgery Standard monofocal IOL (Indian brands)

One final word - based on years of experience and using almost all Indian and International IOLs. This is a personal opinion and should be taken with that disclaimer.

The biggest difference I have found between Indian and International brands is the standardization. What I mean by that is when I have operated 100 patients with Indian IOLs, I have gotten a perfect result in about 90–92 patients and with 8–10 patients, the result has been good but not perfect. With international IOLs, if I have operated 100 patients, I have gotten a perfect result in about 96–97 of them, with 3–4 patients having good but not a perfect result.

Other than that, all IOL brands provide good outcome, if the surgical planning and the surgery itself is done perfectly.
