How Can You Stop Your Glass Power from Increasing or Prevent Myopia Progression?

Read This Very Carefully, If You Have Myopia or Someone in Your Family Has Myopia.

I recently had a 5 year old child who was sent by his school teacher for an eye check-up. While the kid was waiting in the waiting room, I could see from my chamber that he is continuously watching something on the phone. Completely unaware of his surroundings, engrossed in the screen, held very close to his eyes and not ready to let go even if the parents tried.

Myopia is the next Pandemic and we are fast progressing towards a stage where every other person will have myopia glasses.

Can My Glass Power Keep Increasing Even Beyond 18-20 Years Of Age?

Have you seen the ‘Great Khali’, wrestler. He is huge. Just like that, you have some basketball and volleyball players who are unusually tall. Many of these sportsmen suffer from something called as Gigantism/Acromegaly- caused by excessive production of growth hormone.

Similar to this, for few individuals, glass power may keep on increasing till much older age, even till early 30s because the eye growth does not stop growing. For normal people, there is regulation of eye growth and stop signals are produced by the body to stop eye from growing any further between 18–20 years of age. In some patients, these biological stop signals fail and the eye continues growing.

In these cases, eye axial length keeps on increasing leading to increased glass power even till the age of 30–35. So, the most common reasons for having increasing in glass power even at age of 24 years are:

  • 1.Having Pathological Myopia: As discussed before, your eye hasn’t stopped growing and therefore, the power keeps increasing.

  • 2. Keratoconus: A corneal disease where the cornea starts thinning and bulging out. It causes increase in cylindrical number and blurred vision even with glasses. To know more about keratoconus, go through our detailed blog on this topicUnderstanding Keratoconus: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention | Best Cornea Specialist in India | Best Keratoconus Specialist in India

  • 3. No real change but trick by the optical shops: Whenever you go for a check-up, the optometrist may either reduce your power marginally or increase it marginally, so that you buy new glasses. Some people keep thinking why my number has not become stable but actually its just a trick to increase sale of glasses.

There are many simple ways in which myopia progression can be stopped.

I will divide them into 2 parts- 1st part is about what the patient can do themselves to prevent their glass power from increasing and the 2nd part is what treatments can be started by doctors (and patients can ask for them) to stop glass power from increasing.

1st Part- What Parents/Patients can do to stop myopia number from increasing:

  • 1. STOP GIVING YOUR KIDS MOBILE PHONES AT AN EARLY AGE: Excess near work is a very significant factor that cause eye length to increase and cause increase in glass power. Near work includes lots of reading, mobile, tablet or laptop use. TV is the safest because its seen from a distance. So, reduce your near activities as much as possible. Instead of phone, use TV for entertainment, especially in less than 12–13 years of age. • 2.TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS DURING NEAR WORK: Breaking the near cycle and looking at something in the distance, relaxes your eye muscles and stops power from increasing. Keep taking short breaks every few minutes while reading/mobile use.

  • 3. GO OUTSIDE AT LEAST 1.5–2 HOURS A DAY: Sunlight induces a certain hormone production by the retina that stops the eye from growing. So, daily sunlight exposure is a must for kids and young adults.

  • 4. DIET: Healthy diet makes a lot of difference to your eyes. Foods that help in stopping myopia progression are - Oranges, Amla, Papaya, Green Vegetables, Almonds, Walnut, Egg, Fish. Antioxidant rich food with Vitamin A, C and E is needed for your eyes.

These 4 lifestyle changes can really help to stop myopia progression

Coming to 2nd part- What treatments can help stop myopia progression.

  • 1 WEAR GLASSES REGULARLY: Not wearing glasses leads to defocus at retina, and gives signal for eye to grow. Correct power glasses should be worn at all times, especially by kids.

  • 2 LOW DOSE ATROPINE EYE DROPS: Atropine 0.01% has been shown to stop power from increasing by 50%. It is safe, only requires one time dosage and has been proven to have long term good results.

  • 3 SPECIAL MYOPIA GLASSES: Stellest, MYOSMART, Myofocus are some examples of glasses especially designed to stop myopia from increasing. They have been shown to reduce myopia increase by 70% and have good combined affect with low dose atropine drops.

  • 4 ORTHO-K lenses: More popular in US, costly and will need change every 1–2 years but shown good results in stopping myopia and can be used from as early as 8 years of age.

MOST IMPORTANT THING: Till the time your number is completely stabilized, in the growing age, you should get an eye checkup done every 6 months, to ensure you are wearing correct power glasses and there has been no change in number.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

In most people, myopia (increasing eye power) cannot be completely stopped naturally once it has started. However, it can definitely be slowed down. Modern myopia control treatments like lifestyle changes, proper screen habits, and medical management can significantly reduce the speed at which glasses power increases, especially in children and teenagers.

The most common reason for increasing eye power is progression of Myopia. This happens when the eye grows slightly longer than normal. Long screen time, lack of outdoor activity, reading on mobile phones for long hours, and genetic factors are the main reasons why glasses power keeps increasing every year in both children and young adults.

The best ways to slow myopia progression in children include:

  • ● Increasing outdoor activity (at least 1.5–2 hours daily)
  • ● Reducing continuous mobile screen use
  • ● Following proper reading distance
  • ● Regular eye check-ups
  • ● Early treatment if eye power starts increasing quickly
  • These steps are scientifically proven to slow down myopia progression in children.

Eye exercises cannot reduce existing eye power once myopia has developed. However, they may reduce eye strain and improve focusing comfort. Many people search for “how to reduce eye power naturally,” but scientifically, myopia progression is controlled mainly through lifestyle habits and proper eye care rather than exercises alone.

In most people, eye power increases until the late teenage years. Myopia progression usually slows down after 18–20 years of age, but in some people it may continue even after that. Early monitoring helps prevent very high eye power later in life.

Excessive mobile phone use does not directly damage the eye, but long hours of near work (reading on phone, tablet, or laptop) are strongly linked with faster myopia progression. Children who spend long hours on mobile screens and less time outdoors are more likely to develop increasing glasses power.

Spending more time outdoors may not reduce existing eye power, but it is one of the most effective ways to slow myopia progression. Natural sunlight and distance viewing help protect the eyes and reduce the risk of rapidly increasing eye number in children and teenagers.

The best treatment depends on age and eye condition, but the most effective options include:

  • ● Lifestyle changes
  • ● Limiting screen time
  • ● Following proper reading distance
  • ● Regular eye check-ups<
  • ●Early myopia control treatment when required
  • The earlier myopia progression is detected, the easier it is to slow down the increase in glasses power.

Yes, increasing eye power can also happen in adults, especially due to long screen time, stress on the eyes, and continuous near work. If glasses power is increasing even after 25 years of age, a detailed eye examination is important to find the cause.

Increasing eye power itself is not dangerous, but very high myopia can increase the risk of other eye problems in the future. That is why early prevention and proper eye care are very important when glasses power starts increasing every year.

If your glasses power is increasing every year, it is best to get an eye check-up every 6–12 months. Regular monitoring helps detect myopia progression early and allows proper treatment at the right time.

The biggest mistake is ignoring the problem and delaying eye check-ups. Many people try home remedies or internet tips instead of getting proper treatment. Early diagnosis and timely myopia control can prevent very high eye power later in life.
